updated Daysaver essential8 coworking 5

The goal of creating the smallest and lightest bike multi-tool that still offers impressive usability is not one that Daysaver takes lightly. The Essential8 and Coworking5 were already impressive little tools, but now they’ve taken customer feedback to make them even better.

Improved Finish for Essential8

For the Essential8, the updates are mainly in the finish with a new plasma-coated handle for better wear and oxidation resistance. The magnets inside the tool also get an additional epoxy coating added to the NiCuNi coating to improve corrosion resistance as well.

Those who wish to include a Phillips head screwdriver bit to the mix can replace the H2/H2.5 bit with the new H2/JIS bit. Meant to perfectly fit Shimano limit screws, the bit can also be used for Pozidriv and standard Phillips screws as well.

Otherwise, you’re still getting 8 tools at just 33g with a 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8mm hex as well as a T25 Torx bit. The bits are held in by Neodymium magnets, and each bit can be used on either side of the main tool. The Essential 8 sells for $49.95.

Better Chaintool on Coworking5

The Coworking5 is meant to pair perfectly with the Essential8 and adds a chain breaker, tire lever, spoke wrench, valve core tool, and a chain link holder.

To make the chain breaker easier to use, the chain tool pin is now driven by the T25 bit which allows for more torque to be applied. It also features an increased thread diameter with a lower thread pitch to make it easier to drive the chain pin. The chain tool is compatible with 9-12 speed chains including SRAM Flattop.

Sold separately from the Essential8, the Coworking5 sells for $33.95.

Both are available now.

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rails upgrade, top

With a short-nose shape just updated this past autumn, a new Fizik Argo X1 level of the gravel & off-road racing saddle sheds weight with a carbon rail upgrade. I’ve been riding & training on this saddle in 2 different spec levels for almost half a year, and it’s hard to argue with…

Fizik revamped their short-nosed road Vento Argo saddles for more off-road riding & racing with the Vento Argo X a couple of months ago. But now gravel, cyclocross, and even cross-country mountain bike racers can opt for a new lighter Argo X1 with carbon rails.

Built for fast-paced off-road riding, the Fizik Argo X rounds off all the corners of its road sibling, keeping the gently curved top that is comfortable as you move around on the bike. Then, it adds a shade thicker foam, a flatter nose to perch on for steep climbs, and a reshaped ergonomic cutout for improved comfort over bumpy terrain. so your crotch doesn’t get caked in mud. Plus, that cutout gets a rubber mud flap so your crotch doesn’t get caked in grime.

Now you can get it with chromoly, titanium, or… carbon rails.

Riding Impressions

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rails upgrade, riding to gravel

Even though it was only officially introduced last November, I’ve actually been riding the revamped Argo X since last summer on the latest Canyon Grail CF SLX, with ti rails. And now, the new carbon-railed Fizik Argo X1 is sitting on my cross bike. Strapped to my indoor trainer for a little warm-up vibes before CX Worlds this coming weekend.

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rails upgrade, on the trainer

The feel is exactly the same on both bikes. And that’s a good thing. The saddle has firm but supportive padding. Its fiber-reinforced shell is plenty stiff. But then, there’s still a bit of compliant flex in its wings, to not feel unyielding when pedaling. And the large central cutout prevents any undue pressure. While the small mud flap then keeps road & trail spray off my butt, with a tiny vent slit that lets a little airflow through and allows rainwater to drain out on those wettest rides.

Fizik Vento Argo X1 off-road gravel racing saddle Review, new carbon rail version 140mm wide 195g actual weight

The X1 & X3 share identical construction, but for the material of the rails. That’s a great feature in my book. As it means you can pick the model you prefer based on price, weight, and compatibility with your seatpost. My 140mm X1 weighs three grams more than claimed, at an actual 195g.

In my mind, you wouldn’t go wrong with any of the three spec-levels.

These new Adidas Velocade indoor cycling shoes transition off the bike, so you can go with the rest of your life without swapping shoes right after your workout. Mixing up sneaker and sandal styling, Adidas calls the Velocade a performance hybrid indoor cycling shoe that doesn’t have to get stuck only on the stationary bike. Why not work out in a shoe you can wear around the house, around the office, or even around town to get a post-workout coffee…

We’re always quite curious to see new cycling shoes from Adidas. With a storied cycling history on the biggest road racing stage, the off-road power of the Five Ten legacy in-house, plus more and more gravel & lifestyle cycling options, the athletic shoe & sportswear behemoth is really dipping their toe back in the cycling market.

Adidas Velocade walkable mesh indoor cycling shoes, German socks & sandals

Their latest shoe is this Adidas Velocade clipless indoor trainer shoe. This bright green variation looks almost like the rider is wearing sandals over white socks. But, the all-black or white shoes look much more like a normal sneaker. Easily something you could wear off the bike, assuming you don’t click when you walk.

“Velocade is our answer to two of the most common barriers athletes face when trying to fit in a high-quality workout: time and equipment. The ‘hidden’ two-bolt cleat means no more awkward and noisy walks between the changing room, bike and smoothie bar and no waiting to change footwear. Whether it’s high intensity workouts in the gym or your home, commuting, or going on adventures in new places, we are passionate about helping more people to clip in to the power of cycling. With Velocade we have focused on delivering this for the indoor cycling enthusiast – helping them to maximise not just their workouts but how they move through their whole routine.”

– Ben Herath, VP Design, adidas Specialist Sports

Tech details

Adidas Velocade walkable mesh indoor cycling shoes, strechting with SPD cleat

Adidas specifically created the Velocade for versatility – on- and off the bike – much like their Velosamba. But the Velocade leans more towards the performance side of the equation. With a 2/3-length fiber-reinforced nylon midsole plate for pedaling efficiency on 2-bolt MTB cleats. Those most often used on stationary bikes at the gym. Outside of that though, the rest of the shoe is flexible for comfortable walkability, especially the heel.

The trick to crossing over, the shoes feature a long, deep cleat pocket surrounded by a street shoe tread. That’s something I’ve seen done well, or not so well. Not having ridden these (or the Velosambas), I can only rely on anecdotes that say Adidas did a good job of keeping at least SPD cleats from hitting the ground as you walk.

Adidas Velocade walkable mesh indoor cycling shoes, velcro straop

Reasonably light at 230g (claimed) per shoe. The Velocade features a light-vented mesh ‘sock’ upper with one big strap that zig-zags across the top. And there’s just a single velcro patch at the end to adjust fit.

Adidas Velocade – Pricing, options & availability

The new Adidas Velocade shoes sell for $130 / 150€, and are available now in Crystal Jade white & neon green, Carbon black, and Grey One white & silver. They come in unisex US half-sizing from US M5-11/W6-12. Find them in a select number of retailers, or direct from Adidas in your own country.

Founded by people with a passion for off-roading and riding bikes, Rig’d Supply is a company that offers both of those worlds some quality gear. Headquartered in Orange, California, their latest offering is the RambleSwing, a heavy-duty swing-out hitch adapter that reflects the company’s two passions in a nice, neat package.

The Rig’d RambleSwing is a swing-out hitch rack accessory that was tailor-made for vehicles with a rear-mounted, full-size spare tire like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.

Rig'd RambleSwing hitchrack studio closed

It will work with any hitch-stye bike rack you may have and will add the utility of being able to swing it away from the vehicle to access the vehicle’s rear cargo area.

The RambleSwing became available back in the Fall of 2023. It’s burly, with a purposely over-engineered design made to withstand the heaviest bikes on the harshest trails. Boasting a 300lb weight limit, this means the heaviest eBike will be supported.

It’s compatible with all 2″ hitch-mounted bike racks, but Rig’d prefers that you pair it with their bike rack, the RambleRack. The Rig’d RambleSwing has some handy and unique features.

I recently spoke with Luke over at Rig’d, and since they are local to me, I will be picking up a RambleSwing to review on my Jeep Wrangler JL. I’ll be reviewing it while using my Rocky Mounts Guide Rail. After that, I will follow it up with a review of their RambleRack with the 2-Bike Pivot system. Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, on the ground

Ortlieb has a new Duffle RC combination waterproof duffle bag and backpack. It’s not only cheaper than their standard duffle, but simpler and much easier to use in practice. Inspired by the design of the roll closure Rack-Pack, the new Ortlieb Duffle RC comes in two sizes – big or huge. And we’ve started stuffing our gear inside the smaller 49L one to keep everything protected from the nasty wet winter weather outside…

Review: Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L waterproof backpack/duffle bag

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, on my back
(Photos/Cory Benson)

The new Duffle RC is kinda the combination of some of best features of several popular made-in-Germany Ortlieb bags. Or course it starts with their signature heavy-duty waterproof coated polyester fabric and high-frequency welded seams.

It adapts the split clamshell design from their Atrack & Duffle backpacks that keeps your back clean & dry. It directly uses the same adjustable & removable shoulder straps and extra lashing points from the Duffle. And then, it inherits the easy-access wide mouth roll top closure of the Rack Packs.

No zippers, no extra pockets, no unnecessary features. Just a cavernous opening to stuff full of gear you want to keep clean and dry.

Tech details

(Studio photos/ Ortlieb)

The defining feature of the Duffle RC is the long 60cm Roll Closure that opens wide to let you stuff your gear in. The standard Ortlieb Duffle uses a long TiZip zipper, which to be waterproof uses giant stiff teeth that aren’t super easy to use. In fact, I’ve gotten my skin caught when yanking one closed, and I no longer have any desire to get another bag with a zip like that. That does mean the Duffle RC is only IP64 waterproof – meaning dustproof & protected against splashing water from all directions. Not quite the IP67 rating that lets you dunk the original Duffle underwater for a half hour.

I’ll happily take that compromise. And try not to end up underwater with an Ortlieb Duffle RC on my back.

Ortlieb Duffle RC roll-top closure waterproof dufflebag backpack, made-in-Germany, olive backside

The Duffle RC 49L (2990in3) measures 61cm long x 34cm in diameter when stuffed full.

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, 967g actual weight

And my 49L bag weighs 967g, a bit less than the 1kg Ortlieb claims.

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, straps detail

Its 2 lightly padded & ergo-shaped shoulder strap are adjustable or removable. They include a neat velcro strap offset near the middle that joins them together for an easy-carry handle. Or, run one strap diagonally as an over-the-shoulder sling strap. There are also 4 daisy chain loops on each side of the roll-top to attach extra cargo straps or to strap the duffel down to a bike rack.

Sustainability

Ortlieb Duffle RC roll-top closure waterproof dufflebag backpack, made-in-Germany, in-house repairs
(Photo/Cory Benson)

It is made of a PVC-coated fabric, which is durable and waterproof, but not really nice for the environment when disposed of improperly. Ortlieb are ongoing with sustainability evolutions to transition more products to be PVC-free. But they live by the idea their long product life & repairability are the first step anyway. Including in-house consumer repairs.

And Ortlieb knows they have “a long way to go” for improvement. So, they will always take back gear with PVC at the end-of-life for the product, so it gets handled correctly.

First Impressions Review

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, standing

As I alluded to in the details above, the Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L bag is still new to me, but I’m already quite pleased with it. It’s really a no-nonsense way to keep gear protected. I love the simple roll closure for getting inside. That big opening is so much easier than anything else to dig deep in a bag. My only thought is that I probably should have gotten the light colored orange bag to make it easier to see deep into the dark crevices inside.

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag,in my hand

It’s also great that the opening is on the same side as the shoulder straps. So I can drop it onto the muddy ground, open it up to get my stuff, roll it back closed, then put the clean side back onto my back. I have another duffel that has shoulder straps and a padded back on the opposite side of the opening, and opening it on wet/snowy/muddy ground is a mess.

And, I’m already a fan of using small & light musettes to organize my gear inside. Ortlieb also has new Packing Cube bags for organization, that I’m going to try out as well.

Ortlieb Duffle RC 49L Review: waterproof backpack dufflebag, on my back

So far, I’ve only used it in backpack mode, and tossed it into the box of my cargo bike. Those simple shoulder straps are surprisingly comfortable and stable.

Ortlieb Duffle RC roll-top closure waterproof dufflebag backpack, made-in-Germany, cargo bike
(Photo/Ortlieb)

But I can also imagine strapping it down onto a big rear bike rack – there’s plenty of space on the back of this silly thing to lash down a 60cm long stuffed Duffle RC. It is too big for a regular rear rack, but strapping it to any cargo bike would be a solid way to keep your stuff dry, and transition easily off the bike.

Ortlieb Duffle RC – Pricing, availability & options

The benefit to the simplified Ortlieb Duffle RC design is that it’s more than a third cheaper than the standard Duffle, even though it’s still 100% made-in-Germany. My smaller but still big Duffle RC 49L sells for $130 / 120€. And the huge 89L one is just a bit more at $150 / 140€. (Compare that to $230/185€ & $250/195€ for the closest size Duffle 60L & 85L, respectively.)

The versatile Duffle RC comes in black, olive green & coral orange. And is available now from Ortlieb direct in the USA or EU. Or through regular Ortlieb retailers.

Fizik Omna Wide affordable road bike shoes

Fizik is broadening their horizons, so to speak, with a new wide-last option for their popular, affordable Omna road shoes. With a single premium Boa dial closure, stiff-enough reinforced nylon sole, and simple good looks, the Fizik Omna Wide is a great shoe for those roadies looking to rack up the miles, but who aren’t comfortable in overly narrow Italian road kicks…

Fizik Vento Omna Wide affordable road bike shoes

While much of the road shoe chatter goes to top-tier ultralight, ultra-stiff roadie slippers, many road riders simply aren’t too comfy in overly narrow, unforgiving shoes. And that’s where Fizik’s new Omna Wide comes in (and really, the original narrower Omna still, too). These are no-nonsense performance road shoes that don’t skimp on the important details AND won’t break the bank. Plus, the new Wide last option simply means more cyclists are going to find their perfect fit.

Tech details

Fizik developed the Omna Wide to deliver the “optimal fit for riders with wider feet, with a higher volume forefoot area being introduced around the ball of the foot and metatarsals”.

It’s not a huge width difference, really we’re talking <10% overall. But on my size 43 shoe for example, the Wide last could be about 102mm at its widest point vs. ~94mm for the standard fit.

The Omna shoes feature a simple, light & durable synthetic polyurethane upper, perforated through the midfoot for ventilation. Then, closure and fine-tuned adjustment is by a single premium Boa Li2 dial with 2-cross lacing in webbing loops. No plastic guides to break.

Fizik recently redesigned the sole, their vented R5 reinforced nylon outsole with non-replaceable rubber walking lugs, and a stiffness rating of 6/12. That sounds a bit low on paper. But is probably plenty stiff for all but the most sensitive or most competitive road racers. The new sole has slightly shifted the cleat bolts back for improved pedaling ergonomics. And of course, your cleats have plenty of adjustment, so the shoes get 2cm of marking to help line them up where you prefer.

Claimed Fizik Omna Wide weight is 240g (per shoe, without the 20g insole).

Fizik Omna Wide – Pricing, options & availability

Muc-Off D3O Rider Gloves deliver impact protection for aggressive mountain biking

Two new pairs of Muc-Off technical mountain bike gloves aim to keep your hands protected, whether it’s D3O knuckle guards or Thinsulate insulation for when the mercury drops. It’s a new year, so why not treat your fingers to some new gloves. Both get durable softshell construction & water-resistant treatment. So you just have to decide if you need protection from bashing into rocks & trees, or from cold winds…

Since 2020, Muc-Off continued to expand their line-up of technical riding gear. And with the addition of more foul weather kit about a year and a half ago, we wondered when cold and shoulder season gloves might catch up. That time has come.

Muc-Off D3O Rider Gloves for technical mountain biking

The new D3O gloves are simple. Stick a thin ‘shear thickening’ D3O protector in between 2 layers of fabric over your knuckles. It stays soft & flexible as you ride. But at the moment of impact, the almost-magic orange D3O protector stiffens, distributing the impact over a greater area of your hand to minimize the risk of injury.

Muc-Off makes the D3O Rider Gloves from a thin 2-layer stretch softshell fabric, with an abrasion-resistant outer layer. That makes them best-suited for cool weather riding. The D3O protector itself is thin and perforated to let your hand move unrestricted, but also to breathe well. On the outside, a DWR water-resistant coating keeps raindrops at bay. And an extended neoprene cuff keeps cold winds out. They aren’t quite cold winter gloves though, with a tough perforated synthetic microfiber palm that features silicone printed dots for grip.

The D3O gloves are touch-screen-ready, with special conductive index & thumb fingertips so you can snap pics and text your riding buddies. Plus, a soft microfiber wrap-around thumb for nose wiping.

Muc-Off D3O Rider Gloves – Pricing, options & availability

The new D3O gloves come in a 6 size range (XS-XXL), and in two gray-on-black colorways – Bolt or Punk – each with pink accents and silicone palm grippers. They are available now for $50 / 55€, officially as a pre-order. That means, buy now and expect the new gloves to start shipping direct to you in the last week of January.

Winter Rider Gloves, too!

Earlier this season, Muc-Off also added a new pair of Winter Rider Gloves, too. Muc-Off developed them to keep your fingers toasty & warm in cool-to-cold riding conditions, just above freezing. Low bulk insulation was the priority to maximize finger dexterity and the feel of your bar. Plus, a nice thin fleece-lined synthetic palm for a cozy feel inside.

Muc-Off Winter Rider Gloves offer Thinsulate insulation for MTB weather protection, DWR coated

Looking to make a lightweight MTB glove, they sandwiched some Thinsulate insulation into a light softshell for riding between 3-9°C /37-48°F. Then, on top of that, an extended neoprene cuff keeps out the cold wind. And a DWR water-resistant coating will shed a light bout of freezing rain.

Muc-Off promises “ultra-durable construction” to survive winter-after-winter abuse. Into the details, the Muc-Off Winter Rider Gloves also feature touch-screen-compatible tips for your index finger and thumb – so you can Instagram those winter rides. Plus, that same soft microfiber on the outside of the thumb to wipe off your dripping nose & sweaty brow.

The Muc-Off Winter Rider Gloves are available now for $59 / 60€, in the same 6-size run (XS-XXL). They come only in the grey-on-black Bolt design, with pink silicone gripper dots.

Ornot Micro Musette World's Lightest Bike Bag, a simple ultralight 35g classic cycling shoulder bag, packed small

This tiny ultralight Ornot Micro Musette packs down to fit in the palm of your hand, yet is claimed to weight just 35g. And if you want something a bit more protective of your precious cargo, their weatherproof NeoShell Musette is likely not a ton heavier, but made from reclaimed fabric. Either way you look at it, these are two simple bags that will can carry your day-to-day essentials, or be ready anytime to pick up a 6-pack or some sandwiches.

I’m going to speak for everyone in Bikerumor Tower and say that we can never have too many nice musettes. The simple classic road cyclists feed bag isn’t huge. But as a small reusable bag, it’s hard to argue with for carrying a packed lunch, a set of clothes to change into for after your ride, or to pick up a few small items from the shop on the way home. I even love them for organizing clothes & gear inside a bigger bag when I travel. Plus, I’m a sucker for a tiny packable musette. I especially like the weather-resistant Apidura Packable one, a regular part of my bikepacking gear.

Apparently Ornot are part of the Musette Lovers Society, as well. Because they made a fully functional musette from ultralight recycled ripstop nylon in the US. And they gave it secure double snap closure and a tiny internal pocket to stuff it into when not in use. That tiny pocket is even made from leftover scraps from the production of their Micro Climate Jacket.

How light is the World’s Lightest?

A basic cotton musette usually weighs around 75g, that tiny Apidura one is 65g. This Ornot Micro Musette weighs an astonishingly light 35g.

The Micro Musette is a pretty good size at 33x38cm (13×15″), and it gets an expanding gusset pleat bottom for extra storage inside. That makes it quite a bit bigger than my standard flat-style 29x34cm cotton musettes. That’s a size that Ornot says is good for carrying 6 water bottles, or as many of their favorite bhan mi sandwiches

It even gets a reflective tab for visibility when riding in low light with snacks on your back. Its reinforced shoulder strap is not adjustable, but you can always tie a knot to shorten it as needed. I honestly am never really that satisfied with adjustable musette strap hardware.

Water-resistant NeoShell Musette

Equally as simple, roomy & versatile, Ornot also made another musette, of the same size and snap flap closure. This time though, they make the bag out of remnant Polartec NeoShell fabric, that otherwise could have gone to waste.

Meant to be more of a heavy-duty regular use bag, the deadstock NeoShell means it is a bit stretchy and highly water-resistant to keep whatever you are carrying around protected no matter the weather. It’s still packable, but not so tiny, and not with its own stuff pocket.

Ornot Musettes – Pricing, availability & options

Both small bags are the same basic size and simple overall pattern. And Ornot cuts and sews both entirely in California.

I think for what it is, the ultralight Ornot Micro Musette is reasonably priced at $38. It comes in 3 limited edition colors – tangerine, olive green, and light slate gray.

The heavier-duty water-resistant Ornot NeoShell Musette is even more affordable at just $30. And it comes in just 2 colors – navy blue & slate gray.

My tools, CO2s, pumps, shoes, helmets, and everything else needed for a ride are scattered between wall hooks, shelves, cubbies, bins, and desks. Parc’s The Bag is designed to fix such situations by organizing all the bits and pieces into a single bag that also displays them so they’re easy to find.

The Bag works as a backpack, a duffel, or a wall-mounted storage pack, and even has a very clever headrest “hood” that lets you hang it off your car seat for parking lot prep. Or loop it over a rear seat’s grab handle to have it hanging right by your door.

Inside the 32L bag are 20+ pockets, loops, and other features to keep things organized. Clear vinyl pouches make it easy to see everything at glance, and two larger concealed pockets hold shoes and a helmet.

The clamshell design folds open and flat, so it can hang wide open to display everything everywhere all at once.

Close it up with the YKK zippers and it’s a highly water-resistant backpack with a grab handle on the top. Stealth reflective strips run diagonally across the back, and there’s a blinky light loop, too. MSRP is $179.99.
