An athlete will do anything that will make him faster. If that includes narrow handlebars, then yes. Normal handlebars are significantly (!) less aero, so that’s the reason.

If you had the choice, only needing 350 watts because of good aerodynamics or having to produce 500 watts because you sit upright? Obviously you choose the first option, that is way faster…

Common, aerodynamics is also the reason Greg Lemond overcame his deficit in the last TT to win with 8 seconds. Using aero bars is significantly faster, narrower handlebars is too!!!!!
